I choose the Harlem Renaissance for my study for the fact that i love to here or read about my history. It's excites me when i read about the upcoming of African Americans, being that my self makes me have hope for striving to be the best i can be. I expect to see the this come out in this section because the Harlem Renaissance is a good example of Modernism.
The Gilded Six-Bits by Zora Neale Hurston was a great story. The story was kind of hard the read with the way the text was wrote. I like the way she showed that even tho someone can do you wrong, but when love is involved it really don't matter what they did. It was still messed up that Miss May cheated on Joe when she was the one telling him not to believe what Mr. Slemmons said. She was calling him a dummy for believe that he had gold when in the end she was the dummy and almost got her marriage eradicated for a fifty cent piece. Joe was a man of great restraint when dealing with his wife for the next couple of months. He still accepted her as his wife even tho if he wasn't there she was going to sleep with Slemmons that night, that really couldn't have been me.
Poem 1: Richard Corey seemed like he was crazy rich, its crazy how he shot him self in the head when he was so rich. He must have been unhappy with his lifestyle, they didn't say he had a wife so that why i think he may have shot his self. Or maybe it could have been the fact that he came to realize that there was nothing else to live for since he already had everything he want and there was nothing else to achieve.
Poem 2: Mending Wall was a confusing poem to understand. It keep going on and off the topic through out the whole entire poem. To me Robert Frost might be a great poem writer but he could have done better on this one.
Poem 3: In this poem Langston Hughes makes you really think about what happens to a dream deferred. It makes you realize that if you don't follow your dreams your dreams will be like a burden on your mind. What i think what will happens to a dream deferred is it will never come true if you don't have the will power to later on come back and pursue your dream.
Poem 4: This poem really is a great poem to read but not very long. It explains how he is in touch with rivers and nature. One of his quotes was "My soul has grown deep like the rivers", to me it's saying that he has grown a lot in his life time like river has.
Poem 5: To tell you the truth i really didn't like this poem. The reason for that cause the little boy got called a nigger for just smiling at the other person. But i guess it was a good poem for back then cause it tells you what going in the streets of Baltimore.

Realism
Question 1: A- "She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.", and " There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. But she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air."
B- Why people think they shouldn't go on if someone dies close to them.
The story is a great textual description of realism because it describes the scenery of the story, how she feels, and the amount of passion for her husband.
Question 2: A- I seized Covey hard by the throat; and as I did so, I rose. He held on to me, and I to him. My resistance was so entirely unexpected, that Covey seemed taken all aback. He trembled like a leaf
B- To stop slavery and to stop the whippings
Douglass point for writing this story was to let people know on his triumph over his master to gain back his courage and self reliance he have had before he went to Mr. Covey plantation.
My example of Realism is the song from Tupac called "Changes". A line from the song that best describes Realism is "And still I see no changes can't a brother get a little peace There's war in the streets and war in the middle east Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me." That lines makes you realise what the world is really made of.

Dark Romantcism
What is original sin? That every man is born with sin cause of Adam and Eve
How did the Transcendentalists feel about it? That because of their fault you should be punished for it.
Question 1: Hawthorne's would disagree with this because he felt his grandfather was evil for what he did in the early days. Melville would disagree with them because he sailed around the world and witness the evil in people. Poe would disagree with them because he was drove insane wit all the misery that occurred in his life.
Question 2: I'm more of a dark romanticise than a transcendentalist because i see the evil in people everyday where i live.
Question 3: Hop-Frog was a great story and an good example of Dark Romanticism. I like the ending of the story when he got his freedom from the king. Dark Romanticism was presented in the story in different people in the story. First was the king for striking Trippetta down for asking to spare her friend cause it was his birthday. The second was when Hop Frog killed the king and all of his council to get his freedom.
Question 4: In the story there was a paragaph that stuck out to me, the paragraph was
"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil!--Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,Desolate, yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted--On this home by Horror haunted--tell me truly, I implore--Is there--is there balm in Gilead?--tell me--tell me, I implore!"Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore." This paragarph is a good form of an anti-transcendentlist because the bird was just evil to me.
Question 5: Edgar Allen Poe had numorous suicide attempts and unsuccessful relationships and engagements during the time after his wife died. I feel the reason for the style of writing he wrote was the fact that he had so much pain and misery in his life

Writing #1
Deion Sanders was a three-sport athlete in high school also in college, and a two sport athlete in the pros. In high school he was selected to the all-state team in football, basketball, and baseball. He was two-time All-American at Florida State and won numerous awards in the pros. He was the second player in history to play both offense and defense in the NFL and being the only player in history to play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series game, and to play a football and baseball game in the same day.
In college he was one of the greatest athletes of all time. In his freshmen year he was starting at free safety on the football field, was starting outfielder in baseball, and was a part of the track and field team that won a couple of conference championships. In 1986 he was selected for third team All-American. In 1987 and 1988 he was an All-American cornerback winning the Jim Thorpe Award in 1988. He also led the nation in punt return yards and broke the school records leaving him arguably the best cornerback in college football. He also helped win the Sugar Bowl in 1988 with his last second interception to seal the game. On the baseball field his batting average was .331 and had 27 stolen bases in1987. In track and field he ran in the 4x100.
In 1989 he was drafted to the Atlanta Falcons and to the New York Yankees. He was the one of the first man in history to be a two-sport athlete in the pros, where he spent five consecutive seasons the Falcons and two wit the Yankees. He played with other teams in the NFL such as the 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins, and the Ravens. In MLB he played with the Braves and the Reds.
In his time in the NFL, he started off in Atlanta with the Falcons where he led the league in kickoff return yards with 1,067, yards per return averaging 26.7, and in return touchdowns he had 2. Over a 5-year span with the Falcons he got ten touchdowns which were three defensive, three kick returns, two punt returns and two receptions. In 1994 he signed a 1 year, $1 million dollar contract with the 49ers where he recorded 6 interceptions returning them for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns. Deion also won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award that year. In 1995, he signed a 7 year, $35 million dollar contract including a $12.55 million signing bonus with the Cowboys to make him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL.
With an arthroscopic surgery leaving him sidelined for eight weeks, he came back strong in week nine against the falcons. In nine games of that season, he intercepted two passes for thirty-four yards and only had one punt return for fifty-four yards. In1997 he became the NFL all-time leader in interceptions for touchdowns with 14. His first retirement was in 2001 with Redskins which he later came back to the league in 2004 resigning with the Baltimore Ravens where he signed a 1 year, 1.5 million dollar contract.
His baseball career started the same year as his football with his first team, the New York Yankees where he batted .234 in fourteen games. He was later traded to the Atlanta Braves where he batted .304 and led the league with 14 triples in 97 games and stole twenty-eight bases. He had his most outstanding season earning him the National League triple leader. Then in 1997 he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds where he hung up his cleats to concentrate more on football.

Transcendentalism
1. What is original sin? when Adam and eve fail to do god will.
2.How did the Puritans feel about original sin? That god hated everybody for that.
3. How did the Rationalists differ from the Puritans? Rationalists believe that the world can be explain by science and Puritans believe if god didn't explain it it's not true or fit.
4. What is Romanticism? The thought that emphasizes intuition over logic, and feeling over reason.
Question 1: The story of nature was very interesting to me, it talks about how mankind can get in touch with nature through a physical and spiritual form. Really if you ask me i think the man was crazy to say that, cause you can make a mental bond wit nature but not a physical bond. If you talk to nature will it talk back, no and if you spend all of your time with nature will make it you into an unhumanly form, no that's why i say the that man is crazy but that's his opinion.
Question 2: Self-Reliance is a good story to read if you or somebody you know is feeling a little less confident then before. To me its motivates you to to be strong and to have courage in yourself even when there is no courage left in you. The man who wrote this had to be some type of motivator because he has powerful words in his writings.
Question 3: Henry David Thoreau seems like an civil leader on his day. In the story he talks about their government and how it doesn't serve the but serve itself. I can relate to him on his statements because sometimes i be feeling the same way about our govt today. He also talks about how spending time in jail made him wake up and see the world for what it is.
Scenario 2 seems like a tough situation, Chris really needs to what he feels is best. If he doesn't want to become a lawyer don't become one. You shouldn't be in a career don't doesn't excite or interest you because you hate to go to work everyday and eventually quit. A Transcendentalists would feel the same way i feel about the situation.

American Romanticism
Question 1: Rip Van Winkle was a great story for a children tale because it gave you fantasy and realism in the same story. Rip was very lazy man with no cares in the world and still survived without money, i wish i could that. He always gave up his spare time to help others in less of need then him probably stupid on his part according to his wife but he didn't care. That's what i really like about him, he just enjoyed being alive and to have his dog by his side.
The thing that i didn't like about him that he didn't take care of his family like he was suppose to do. Even though he was carefree he still should have took care of his business at home like a man should do. It was really messed up is how he let his children go around looking like raggedy Ann dolls, i just don't understand why he did it cause if it was mine they would be the most well dressed in the village and my wife too.
The reason i think why the author wrote this folk tale is tell you shouldn't let hardships get you down but don't become to carefree that you can hold your own.
Question 2: The first example of being romantic is when he came back to the city and found his daughter and he ask about his wife even though he hate her nagging(the 6Th chapter), and the second is how everybody in the village loved and nobody hated him
Question 3: i really didn't get the poem

Question 4: the point in this poem is to show how to use your imagination and picture your in one of the seen. The image that most appeals to me is the boy flying his kite in the summer it reminds me of how used to go to grandparents house in SC and fly kites with my grandpa. Its a good example of Romanticism cause it take you to your own little paradise.
